Studio portrait of 4846 Private (Pte) Alfred James Mullins, 57th Battalion, of Burwood, NSW. A painter before enlisting in September 1915, Pte Mullins left Australia for Egypt with the 15th Reinforcements of the 2nd Battalion in March 1916. He was transferred to the 57th Battalion as part of the 'doubling-up' of the AIF, and arrived in France for service on the Western Front in in May 1916. Pte Mullins was killed in a front-line trench at Fleurbaix when a German shell landed nearby on 29 July 1916. He was aged 22.
