Description

Set of five studio portraits of members of a Tasmanian family, four of whom served in the First World War, and three of whom were killed in action. The portraits have been published in a newspaper or magazine with the title 'A patriotic family (three generations)'. Each portrait was printed with a caption as follows, left to right: 'The late John Tilyard, of Glenorchy, who died recently, aged 73 years'; 'Private H. C. Tilyard, son of the late John Tilyard, of Glenorchy, killed in action'; 'Corporal Ray Wing (grandson), Ulverstone'; 'Private A. J. J. Wing, grandson of the late John Tilyard, killed in action'; 'Private R. G. Wing (grandson), Ulverstone, killed in action'. 2650 Private (Pte) Henry Claude Tilyard, 40th Battalion, was killed in action on 28 March 1918 in France. 2404 Temporary Corporal (T/Cpl) Raymond Alfred Wing, of Gunns Plains, Tas, initially embarked with the 2nd Reinforcements of the 15th Battalion as a Private, service number 1635. However, he was discharged in Colombo for medical reasons and returned to Australia. He re-enlisted on 2 October 1916 and embarked with the 4th Reinforcements of the 40th Battalion on 25 October 1916. He returned to Australia on 24 August 1918 and was discharged on 29 October 1918 for family reasons. His brother 2408 Private (Pte) Allan John Joseph Wing, 40th Battalion, had been killed in action on 13 October 1917 at Passchendaele, at the age of 23. A second brother, 2531 Robert George Wing, 15th Battalion, had been killed in action on 9 August 1916.
