Description
Studio portrait, taken prior to enlistment, of 2650 Private (Pte) Henry Claude Tilyard, 40th Battalion, of Glenorchy, Tas. A labourer before enlisting on 2 October 1916, Pte Tilyard embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Ulysses (A38) on 25 October 1916 with the 5th Reinforcements. He was killed in action on 28 March 1918 in France, at the age of 35, and is buried in the Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L'Abbé.
