Studio portrait of 5046 Private (Pte) Lionel Wallace Landon, 20th Battalion, of Bombala, NSW. A railway porter prior to enlistment, he embarked from Sydney with the 13th Reinforcements aboard HMAT Ajana on 5 July 1916. Proceeding to France in November 1916, Pte Landon was temporarily attached to the No 1 Forestry Company the following year. Later transferring to the 35th Battalion, he was appointed Lance Corporal (L Cpl) in August 1918. While taking part in an advance on German positions with "B" Company, 35th Battalion, near Bray, L Cpl Landon was killed in action on 22 August 1918, aged 25. According to his senior officer, the company had reached its objective and were digging in when the enemy openend machine gun fire on the men, killing L Cpl Landon instantly. He was buried near the Bray - Corbie road, and is commemorated on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial, France.
