Studio portrait of 406964 Sergeant (Sgt) Charles Richard Townsend of Bassendean, WA. Enlisting in the RAAF in May 1941, Sgt Townsend trained as an observer under the Empire Air Training Scheme (EATS) in Australia and Canada, and was posted to No. 199 Squadron at RAF Ingham in Lincolnshire. He was killed during an operational sortie over Essen on the night of 12/13 March 1943 when his Wellington bomber, serial number HZ263, radio call-sign EX-E (E-Edward), was hit by flack and crashed into the English Channel off the coast of Holland. Aged 24 at the time of his death, he has no known grave.
