3170244 Lance Corporal (l Cpl) John Francis Gillespie (left), a medic of 8 Field Ambulance, gives a "V for Victory" sign after a simulated medical evacuation for a visiting delegation from Australia, at Vampire helipad, Vung Tau, on 17 April 1971. During a dangerous dustoff mission in the Long Hai Hills later that day, the Iroquois helicopter was shot down. L Cpl Gillespie was trapped in the burning wreckage and died. His remains were able to be recovered and he was reported as missing in action, then classified as killed in action. This image is a frame enlargement from AWM film number F04921.
