The last Australian troops to leave Nui Dat. Known as Operation South Ward, M113A1 Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC) of A Squadron, 3 Cavalry Regiment, carry infantry of D Company (D Coy), 4 Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment - New Zealand (ANZAC), (4RAR), through the gates of the former Australian task force base after handing control of it back to regional forces of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam on 7 November 1971. Identified, seated on the right side of the lead vehicle, with a 7.62 mm L1A1 self-loading rifle (SLR) across his knee is 18410 Private Raymond Edward Richards of D Coy and in front of him is APC driver, 312615 Trooper John Anthony Smith and to his right behind the gun shield is crew commander, 157616 Corporal James Gregorio Canuto, an Aboriginal serviceman from Yarrabah, Queensland.
