Cropped portrait of 2615 Private (Pte) Sydney Keith McKessar, 33rd Battalion, of Manilla, NSW. A grocer before enlisting at Armidale in April 1916, Pte McKessar left Australia for England with the 5th Reinforcements and arrived in France for service on the Western Front in April 1917. Pte McKessar was killed during a raid at St Yves on 5 June 1917 whilst scouting the German positions in preparation for the commencement of the Battle of Messines the following day, aged 21. The photograph is copied from a memorial booklet which is held at the Regional Museum at Albury, NSW.
