Studio portrait of 638 (later 638A) Private (Pte) James Joseph Lynch, 13th Machine Gun Company, of Brisbane, Qld. An axeman prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 11th Reinforcements on HMAT Ascanius (A11) on 11 May 1917. He later transferred to the 44th Battalion. The unit was engaged in the Ypres sector and took part in the major battle of Broodseinde Ridge. When the Germans launched their last great offensive in March 1918, the 44th was deployed to the Amiens sector in France. Pte Lynch was killed in action at the Battle of Hamel on 4 July 1918, aged 23.
