Portrait of 3121 Private (Pte) Ernest Vawdrey Phillips, 30th Battalion, of Stawell, Victoria. A grocer prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 7th Reinforcements, 37th Battalion from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ballarat on 19 February 1917. While serving in France, Pte Phillips was killed in action on 30 August 1918, aged 32. His name is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
