Studio portrait of NX128574 Acting Corporal (A/Cpl) John Robert Dore of Urana, NSW. A/Cpl Dore enlisted on 9 July 1942 and served with 2/9 Battalion in New Guinea. From 1943, the battalion was involved in the Bougainville campaign, making the first attack and capturing George Hill and later Arty Hill (Artillery Hill). In January 1945, the battalion was transferred to the southern sector of Bougainville where it joined the advance to the Puriata River. A/Cpl Dore was killed in action in Bougainville on 6 February 1945, aged 22.
