Studio portrait of 2609 Private (Pte) Bertie Emanuel Galli, DCM MM, 1st Battalian Imperial Camel Corps, with a portrait of his cousin Edie Loughman inset into the top left hand corner. A labourer of Bega, NSW, prior to enlistment, he embarked on 9 August 1915 with the 8th Reinforcements of the 2nd Battalion on HMAT Runic (A54). In January 1916 he transferred to the Imperial Camel Corps. On 30 October 1917 he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field. In February 1918 he received the Distinguished Conduct Medal for an action on 19 April 1917 when he led three camels loaded with ammunition forward; despite being under heavy fire and the camels in turn being killed, he achieved his objective. He also received a Mention in Despatches in January 1918. Pte Galli returned to Australia on HT Plassy in September 1919.
