Group portrait of eight recruits at the Broadmeadow Training Camp near Maitland, NSW. Identified in the back row, third from the left is 70 Private (Pte) Kenneth Ellicott, 35th Battalion, of West Maitland. An ironmonger before enlisting in September 1915, Pte Ellicott left Australia for England in May 1916, arriving in France for service on the Western Front in January 1917. He was admitted to hospital with shell-shock in June 1917 following the battalion's participation in the offensive at Messines in Belgium, and after his promotion to Sergeant (Sgt) in August 1917, was wounded during the battalion's next engagement at Passchendaele Ridge in October 1917. Sgt Ellicott was killed during the German attack on Villers-Bretonneux on 4 April 1918, aged 29. Also identified in the front row, first on the left is Kenneth Ellicott's younger brother, 71 Pte Harold Ellicott, who also served with the 35th Battalion and in 1918 was the recipient of the Military Medal (MM).
