The weekly fair, Escarbotin
In the foreground of this village fair are two well-to-do men; one wears a black bowler hat, a fur coat and smokes a cigar as he looks down into a wooden slat box with straw and three piglets. Nearby is a local woman with a large pig bound by its back right ancle. Also pictured nearby are two Australian soldiers, two women and a man with two horses (only one of which faces front, its head bent toward the pig). Off to the right of this central scene can be seen the backs of a group comprising mainly of women and children, above their heads is the eave of a market stall. In the background is a row of two or three storey houses suggesting the fair is in the middle of the village.
Friville-Escarbotin is a village in the Somme departement in the Picardie region of northern France, and is likely to be the town being referenced here by Kearton.
