The village beggar
Description
Depicts a beggar woman bent over from the weight of the child on her back; her hair is pulled back loosly in a bun, she wears clogs and an anguished war-weary expression on her face, with another child standing behind her. With her mouth agape, she stares pleadingly at an Australian soldier who gestures toward her with open palms as if indicating that he has nothing to give. Another Australian soldier stands by, giving the woman a sideways glance, his hands buried deep in his pockets. Behind the woman, a third Australian soldier approaches carrying two buckets of water.
