Studio portrait of 4205 Private (Pte) George Mervyn Hawkins, 4th Battalion, of Garra, NSW. A labourer before enlisting in September 1915, Pte Hawkins left Australia for Egypt with the 13th Reinforcements in December 1915, and was transferred to the 2nd Battalion with the serial number 4205A as part of the 'doubling-up' of the AIF in February 1916. Arriving in France for service on the Western Front in March 1916, he was wounded in action at Pozieres and died at the 3rd Australian Field Ambulance Dressing Station on 25 July 1916, aged 19.
