Studio portraiot of Q34162 Private (Pte) Herbert John Keller of Home Hill, Qld. Called up for national service for home defence in September 1940, Pte Keller served with the 31/51 Battalion (Kennedy/Far North Queensland Regiment), and performed garrison duty in northern Queensland before being sent to Bougainville Island in December 1944 when the battalion became a combat unit. He was wounded in action during the battalion's attack on Japanese positions at Porton and died of wounds on 26 June 1945, aged 30.
