Description
Outdoor portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Charles William Hay, AFC, of Lady Bay, Tasmania. An mechanical engineer prior to enlistment on 11 January 1915, Hay served with the Australian Army Service Corps in France until transferring to the Australian Flying Corps on 30 April 1917. Following training in England, Hay graduated as Flying Officer in November of that year and was promoted to Lieutenant in February 1918. At the age of 32, Lt Hay was killed when his Sopwith Camel (B. 7461) crashed into the sea off the coast of Montrose, Scotland on 8 April 1918.
