A clerk before enlisting on 3 May 1915, he embarked from Fremantle on HMAT Geelong on 5 June 1915 with the 1st Reinforcements. He reverted to the rank of Private when absorbed into the Battalion on 18 August 1915. He embarked from Alexandria for Gallipoli on 4 September 1915. He was admitted to hospital on 11 December 1915 with influenza, and evacuated to Heliopolis. He was transferred to the 51st Battalion on 2 April 1916, arriving in France on 12 June 1916. He was wounded in action on 14 August 1916 and was evacuated to England. While in England he was transferred to the 70th Battalion on 23 March 1917, then back to the 51st Battalion on 21 August 1917, rejoining his unit in France on 10 September 1917.
