Studio portrait of 1853 Trooper (Tpr) Roy Fergus Cunningham, 6th Light Horse Regiment, of Goulburn, NSW. A labourer before enlisting in September 1915, Tpr Cunningham left Australia for Egypt with the 13th Reinforcements in December 1915, and transferred to Royal Australian Artillery in March 1916. Arriving in France for service on the Western Front in June 1916, Gunner (Gnr) Cunningham was attached to the 25th Field Artillery (Howitzer) Brigade the following month, and transferred again to the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade in April 1917. Gnr Cunningham was killed instantly when he was hit by shell fragments whilst manning a gun pit along the Menin Road on 26 October 1917. He was buried nearby, but the cross marking his grave was lost and consequently has no known grave.
