Studio portrait of 1764 Private John Gammage, 1st Battalion. A baker born in Cootamundra, NSW, he embarked with the 4th Reinforcements, 1st Battalion on 10 April 1915. He was wounded on Gallipoli in August 1915 and evacuated to Mudros for medical treatment before rejoining his unit in September. In January 1916 he transferred to the Imperial Camel Corps, and in March 1918, a further transfer took him to the Australian Provost Corps. In August 1919 he left Egypt for Australia.
