Studio portrait of an Australian soldier, probably 4977 Private (Pte) Bertie Clarence Bartlett, 17th Battalion, of Parkes, NSW. Pte Bartlett, a labourer before enlisting on 17 January 1916, embarked at Sydney on 5 June 1916 on HMAT Kyarra with the 13th Reinforcements. Within the battalion he was known as 'Bluey' due to his red hair. He was wounded in action on 3 February 1917 and evacuated to England, rejoining his battalion on 15 August 1917. While serving in the Lewis Gun Section of 40 Platoon, C Company, on 9 October 1917 at Passchendaele, he was killed in action. He was 24 years old. His brother, 834 Lance Corporal Owen John Thomas Bartlett, also served with C Company of the 17th Battalion, and was wounded at Passchendaele on the same day, dying of his wounds six days later.
