Description

Studio portrait of 157 Private (Pte) Norman Edgar Matthews, 6th Light Horse Regiment (later Anzac Provost Corps), of Goulburn, NSW. Pte Matthews, a clerk before enlisting on 22 August 1914, embarked from Sydney on 21 December 1914 on HMAT Suevic with A Squadron. He was evacuated from Gallipoli on 4 September 1915. On 3 April 1916 he was taken on strength of the Anzac Provost Corps, and was promoted to Corporal on 6 April. On 4 February 1917 he was injured in Heliopolis, when the horse he was riding swerved and collided with another horse. He died the same day at the 14th Australian General Hospital.
