Studio portrait of 407700 Sergeant (Sgt) William Jack Taylor of Quorn, SA. A porter with the Commonwealth railways before enlisting in the RAAF in December 1940, Sgt Taylor trained as an observer in Australia and was posted to 223 Squadron RAF in North Africa. Later promoted to Flight Sergeant, he was with the squadron for three months before he was killed during his second raid with the squadron when his Martin 187 Baltimore bomber was shot down on an operational sortie during the Western Desert Campaign on 23 May 1942. He was aged 28.
