Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt)Hubert Leslie Fry, Australian Light Horse, who was a 33 year old merchant from Brighton, Victoria, formerly from Norwood, South Australia, when he enlisted on 16 December 1914. He was appointed a Second Lieutenant and embarked for overseas with the 8th Light Horse Regiment from Melbourne on 25 February 1915 aboard HMAT Star of Victoria. While serving at Gallipoli, he took ill, was evacuated to hospital and eventually returned to Australia on 14 January 1916. Seven months later he was medically discharged and then died on 10 October 1917. Lt Fry's name does not appear on the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour as he died after he was discharged from the AIF. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
