Studio portrait of 191 Lance Corporal Arnold Cooper Sandland, 10th Battalion, who was a 24 year old land agent from Jamestown, South Australia when he enlisted on 22 August 1914. He embarked for overseas from Adelaide on 20 October 1914 aboard HMAT Ascanius. Following further training in Egypt, the 10th Battalion was part of the covering force for the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 and so was the first ashore at around 4:30 am. The 10th Battalion was heavily involved in establishing and defending the front line of the ANZAC position, and served there until the evacuation in December. After the withdrawal from Gallipoli, the 10th Battalion returned to Egypt and, in March 1916, sailed for France and the Western Front. After being promoted to Lieutenant (Lt) on 16 March 1916, he was wounded in action on 21 June 1916 at Petillon, France, and later died of those wounds on 4 August 1916. Lt Sandland is buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
