Studio portrait of 1043 Private Thomas Wolmer English, 4th Field Ambulance, who was a 20 year old bank clerk from Dulwich, South Australia when he enlisted on 4 November 1914. He embarked for overseas from Adelaide on 22 December 1914 aboard HMAT Berrima. Although wounded at Gallipoli, he recovered and saw further action in France with the 50th Battalion. Appointed a 2nd Lieutenant on 17 March 1916, he returned to Australia on 3 February 1919 as a Captain. Captain English also served during the Second World War from 18 June 1940 until 31 July 1946 in the Intelligence Corps in South Australia. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
