After embarking for overseas from Adelaide, South Australia on 22 October 1914 aboard HMAT Ascanius, he underwent further training in Egypt and then landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. He was killed in action that same day and is honoured on the Lone Pine Memorial at Gallipoli with those who have no known grave.
