Studio portrait of Major William James Waddell, 4th Light Horse Brigade Train who was a 26 year old clerk from Rose Park, South Australia when he was commissioned on 26 March 1915. He embarked for overseas as a Lieutenant from Adelaide on 26 May 1915 aboard HMAT Afric. After he had seen action at Gallipoli, he went on to serve in France where he was Mentioned in Despatches for duties with the 2nd Australian Divisional Headquarter from February until July 1917. He was awarded a Military Cross (MC) for courage in carrying out reconnaissance in heavily shelled areas between 22 September 1917 and 24 February 1918. Major Waddell arrived back in Australia on 21 March 1919. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
