Studio portrait of L.G. Dean, probably 8359 Private George Lancelot Dean, 6th Field Artillery Brigade who was a 29 year old grazier from Kensington Park, South Australia when he enlisted on 13 August 1915. He embarked for overseas with the 18th Battery from Melbourne on 24 November 1915 aboard HMAT Botanist. After being promoted to Corporal, he was appointed a Second Lieutenant in March 1916, a Lieutenant in August 1916 and a Captain in May 1918. While on active service in France with the 5th and 22nd Field Artillery Brigades, he was awarded a Belgian Croix de Guerre. Captain Dean arrived back in Australia on 13 May 1919. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
