Studio portrait of Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) Lancelot Ashley Lewis, 3rd Light Horse Regiment who was a 29 year old pastoral inspector from Kooringa, South Australia when he was appointed on 24 August 1914. He embarked for overseas from Adelaide on 22 October 1914 aboard HMAT Port Lincoln. While serving at Gallipoli, he took ill and was invalided to England but recovered and returned to his unit in Egypt. On 24 December 1916 he was wounded in action and evacuated dangerously ill to South Africa. When recovered sufficiently to travel, he returned to Australia as a Major on 21 September 1917 and his appointment was terminated on medical grounds. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
