Studio portrait of 2nd Lieutenant William Howard Christophers, 12th Battalion who was a 20 year old civil servant from Torrensville, South Australia when he enlisted on 20 May 1915. He embarked for overseas with the 17th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 24 June 1915 aboard HMAT Kanowna. After seeing action at Gallipoli, he went on to serve in France where he transferred to the 52nd Battalion and was promoted to Captain. He was wounded in action on 7 June 1917 near Messines, France and evacuated to England. After returning to France, he was transferred to the 50th Battalion. Captain Christophers arrived back in Australia on 24 December 1919 and also served in the Second World War with the Garrison Battalion from 1939 until his death on 15 November 1942. He is listed on the Second World War Roll of Honour. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
