He embarked for overseas from Melbourne on 17 July 1915 aboard HMAT Orsova and served at the Convalescent Depot, Harefield Park, London. While later serving with the 2nd Field Ambulance in France he was wounded in action on 24 July 1916 and was gassed on 2 September 1918. He recovered from both incidents and arrived back in Australia on 15 February 1919. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War.
