Studio portrait of 28556 Gunner Douglas Burns Reid, 6th Field Artillery Brigade who was a 25 year old timber merchant from Adelaide, South Australia, when he enlisted on 25 April 1916. He embarked for overseas with the 10th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 25 October 1916 aboard HMAT Ulysses. While serving in France, he was wounded in action on 18 August 1917 and evacuated to England for medical treatment. He returned to his unit in France and was gassed on 10 September 1918. After studying at the Royal Artillery Officers' School in England, he was appointed a Second Lieutenant on 4 January 1919. He resigned and returned to Australia via America on a work visit related to the timber industry. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
