Studio portrait of Second Lieutenant Arthur Towers Matters, 27th Battalion who was a 29 year old licensed land broker from Adelaide, South Australia, when he received a commission in the AIF. He embarked for overseas with the 17th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 6 November 1916 aboard HMAT Afric. On 4 October 1917 he was wounded in action near Ypres, Belgium and evacuated to England. After recovering, he returned to his unit in France in May 1918 and was again wounded in action on 6 August 1918 near Villers Bretonneux, France. He was again evacuated to England and following recovery, worked in London before returning to Australia where his appointment was terminated on 18 September 1919. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
