Studio portrait of Lieutenant Colonel George Henry Dean, 13th light Horse Regiment who was a 56 year old stock agent from Marryatville, South Australia, when he was appointed in the AIF on 11 March 1915. He was appointed Commanding Officer of the 13th Light Horse Regiment on 4 May 1915 and embarked for overseas from Melbourne on 12 May 1915 aboard HMAT Persic. While at Gallipoli, he took ill and was evacuated to England and then returned to Australia on 19 April 1916. On 29 July 1916, he was promoted to Colonel and appointed as Officer Commanding Troops on Transports and embarked from Sydney on 3 November 1916, from Melbourne on 4 August 1917 and from Sydney on 21 March 1918. After the war he was placed on the reserve list as an Honorary Brigadier. He died on 12 February 1953. He was the father of Colonel Edwin Theyer Dean who also served in the First and Second World Wars [see image P07159.087].One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
