He embarked for overseas with A Company from Adelaide on 9 June 1916 aboard HMAT Afric. While serving in France, he sprained his ankle, was evacuated to England and then returned to Australia on 4 October 1918. He was the brother of CQMS Kenneth Warren Sharp and Private Malcolm Robert Sharp [see images P07159.078 and P07159.077 respectively].
