Studio portrait of 7512 Private Magnus Graham Saunders, 10th Battalion who was a 28 year old cashier from North Adelaide, South Australia when he enlisted as a Private on 11 September 1915. After being promoted to Corporal and then commissioned a Second Lieutenant on 3 March 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 19th reinforcements from Melbourne on 12 August 1916 aboard HMAT Ballarat. He was awarded a Military Cross (MC) for bravery and leadership under fire in operations east of Ypres, Belgium, from 19 to 22 September 1917. Although wounded in action in France on 5 May 1918 and evacuated to England for medical treatment, he recovered and returned to his unit in France. He returned to Australia with the rank of Captain and his appointment was terminated on 4 February 1920. He served again in the Second World War in 4 Garrison Battalion from 2 October 1939 until 1 May 1941. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
