Studio portrait of G.A. Pavey who is probably 9748 Private Gordon Augustus Pavy, 48th Battalion, a 24 year old clerk from North Adelaide, South Australia who enlisted on 10 December 1915. After being promoted to Sergeant in February 1916, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on 25 July 1916. He embarked for overseas with the 5th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 28 August 1916 aboard HMAT Anchises. While serving in France, he was wounded in action and evacuated to England for treatment but recovered and returned to France. He was promoted to Lieutenant in January 1917 and to Captain in May 1918. Captain Pavy returned to Australia on 31 December 1919. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
