After joining the 50th Battalion on the Western Front in March 1918, he was wounded in action near Villers Bretonneux, France on 25 April 1918 and evacuated to England. He returned to France and was appointed a Second Lieutenant on 3 March 1919 before arriving back in Australia on 6 August 1919.
