Studio portrait of Major Edwin Theyer Dean, Field Artillery Brigade who was a 31 year old stock salesman from Glen Osmond, South Australia, when he was appointed to the AIF on 20 October 1915. He embarked for overseas with the 18th Battery from Melbourne on 22 November 1915 aboard HMAT Persic. While on active service in France, he was wounded in action on 4 June 1917, was Mentioned in Despatches on four occasions, was awarded the Croix De Chevalier (Legion of Honour) and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) on 9 June 1917 for his devotion, courage and leadership as Officer Commanding the 18th Battery. He returned to Australia on 25 April 1919. During the Second World War he was mobilised for full time duty in Australia on 12 August 1940 and served until placed on the retired list as an Honorary Colonel on 17 January 1947. He was the son of Colonel George Henry Dean who also served in the First and Second World Wars [see image P07159.075]. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
