Studio portrait of 22235 Gunner Mervyn Leslie Green, 23rd Howitzer Brigade, who was a 23 year old orchardist from Launceston, Tasmania (formerly from North Adelaide, South Australia) when he enlisted on 3 February 1916. He embarked for overseas from Melbourne on 20 May 1916 aboard HMAT Medic. While serving in France with the 23rd Field Artillery Brigade, he was wounded (gassed) on 23 November 1917 and evacuated to England. After returning to his unit in France in June 1918, he took ill and was evacuated to England again on 30 September 1918. Gunner Green arrived back in Australia on 13 February 1919. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War.The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
