Studio portrait of Lieutenant Roy Stirling Fotheringham, Australian Light Horse, from Magill, South Australia who served as a Lieutenant in the Fifth Imperial Contingent during the Boer War, leaving for South Africa on 9 February 1901 and returning to Australia on 27 April 1902. He was a 33 year old stock agent when he was appointed to the 11th Light Horse Regiment on 3 March 1915 and embarked for overseas with the 9th Light Horse Regiment from Adelaide on 27 October 1915 aboard HMAT Benalla. He saw action in France with the 25th Howitzer Brigade but was dismissed from the service in the United Kingdom by sentence of a court martial on 6 September 1917. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
