He embarked for overseas from Adelaide on 26 August 1915 aboard RMS Morea. After serving with the 9th LHR in Egypt and with the 50th Battalion in France, he was married in England after the war, and returned to Australia as a Staff Sergeant, with his wife, on 29 July 1919. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
