Studio portrait of 6926 Private Rowland John Patton Rees, 28th Battalion who was a 44 year old civil servant from York, Western Australia (born in Adelaide, South Australia) when he enlisted on 21 March 1916. He embarked for overseas with the 17th Reinforcements from Fremantle, Western Australia on 90 November 1916 aboard HMAT Argyllshire. After serving with the Australian Army Pay Corps in the United Kingdom, he returned to Australia on 17 October 1919 with the rank of Sergeant. He was the brother of Lieutenant Sydney Bagot Rees [see image P07159.117]. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
