Studio portrait of Second Lieutenant Stuart William Matters, 11th Field Company Engineers who was 25 year old surveyor from Unley Park, South Australia when he enlisted on 1 July 1915. He was commissioned and embarked for overseas from Adelaide on 31 May 1916. While serving in France, he was wounded in action on 24 April 1918 at Le Treport, France and evacuated to England. On recovering, he returned to his unit in France and after the war, returned to Australia with the rank of Lieutenant. His appointment was terminated on 25 September 1919. He was Mentioned in Despatches in Sir Douglas Haig's despatch of 16 March 1919. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
