Studio portrait of 1057 Sergeant James Leslie Gordon, 4th Field Ambulance who was a 30 year old solicitor from Glenelg, South Australia when he enlisted on 12 September 1914. He embarked for overseas from Melbourne on 22 December 1914 aboard HMAT Berrima. While serving at Gallipoli in the rank of Staff Sergeant, he was killed in action on 1 August 1915 and is buried in Beach Cemetery, at the southern end of Anzac Cove. His brother, 1144 Private (Pte) Kenneth Douglas Gordon, 10th Battalion was killed in action on 25 April 1915 and is buried in the Lone Pine Cemetery at Gallipoli. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
