Studio portrait of 201 Private Nigel Fletcher Wastell, 9th Light Horse Regiment who was a 25 year old clerk from Adelaide, South Australia when he enlisted on 15 September 1914 and embarked for overseas from Melbourne on 12 February 1915 aboard HMAT Armadale. He saw action at Gallipoli and later in the Middle East where he was wounded in action on two separate occasions. While serving with the 3rd Light Horse Regiment, he was appointed a Lieutenant on 1 September 1917. He was awarded a Military Cross (MC) for conspicuous gallantry while wounded at the Jordan crossing on 27 September 1918. Lieutenant Wastell returned to Australia on 22 January 1919. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
