Studio portrait of 792 Private Maxwell Ulrich Hubbe, 11th Battalion who was a 23 year old farmer from Nangeenan, Western Australia (formerly from Knightsbridge, South Australia) when he enlisted on 10 September 1914. He embarked for overseas from Fremantle on 2 November 1914 aboard HMAT Ascanius. After seeing action at Gallipoli, he was promoted to Second Lieutenant and transferred to the 1st Pioneer Battalion and saw further action in France and Belgium. He was wounded in action on 5 October 1917 and evacuated to England but later returned to his unit in France. After promotion to Captain, he was awarded a Military Cross for consistently good work and devotion to duty as a Company Commander in the 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion from 25 February to 16 September 1918. Captain Hubbe, MC arrived back in Australia on 15 January 1919. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
