Studio portrait of 214 Lance Corporal Hugh McLatchie Orr, 16th Battalion who was a 23 year old farmer from Perth, Western Australia when he enlisted on 18 September 1914. He embarked for overseas from Melbourne on 22 December 1914 aboard HMAT Ceramic. After seeing action at Gallipoli, he went on to serve in France where he was captured at Riencourt, on 11 April 1917. He was held as a prisoner of war (POW) in Germany until repatriated to England on 22 November 1918. Sgt Orr arrived back in Australia on 10 April 1919. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
